Maori Party Co-leader Tariana Turia has welcomed the announcement that the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) has called for an urgent investigation into a company promoting a brand of infant formula under the trading name of ‘heitiki’.

“The announcement that MAF is investigating Kiaora New Zealand International validates the efforts of Nga Maia (Maori Midwives), New Zealand Breastfeeding Association and Maori health providers to speak out in their concern at the basis of this product’.

“I am greatly reassured that an investigation was called so promptly following concerns made public by the Maori Party last Wednesday, and reinforced today through the support of the New Zealand Food and Grocery Council” said Mrs Turia.

“The more we learn about this company and its spurious claims to be creating a formula which contains the ‘super-gene’, the greater our concern” said Mrs Turia.

“Today I advised the Ministers of Consumer Affairs, Health and Food Safety of the accumulated concerns associated with the production of infant formula by the ‘Kiaora’ company” said Mrs Turia.

“The health and wellbeing of our babies must never be jeopardised by products which can not withstand the full scrutiny of authorities” said Mrs Turia.

“It is disingenuous of any company to trade on the natural purity and strength of our indigenous reputation by misappropriating cultural symbols to promote their product” said Mrs Turia.

‘I am greatly relieved that MAF has taken these concerns seriously and we await the results of their investigation with much interest” ended Mrs Turia
