Smoking To Be Put Out By 2058?

Wellington, Jan 11 NZPA - The smoking habit could be extinguished in New Zealand by 2058, an international study says.

However, investment bank Citigroup estimates Australians could stop smoking even earlier -- by 2030.

It estimates there will be no smokers in the first world countries within about 50 years.

"The percentage of smokers is declining across the developed world, and the declines are more or less in a straight line in most markets," Citigroup told Britain's The Telegraph.

"If these trends continue, then by 2050, many important tobacco markets will have gone to zero smoking."
