Southern Cancer Network Website Launched

A new website launched by the Southern Cancer Network (www.southerncancernetwork.org.nz), offers advice on how to take good care of yourself in order to reduce your risk of becoming ill later in life.

The Southern Cancer Network (SCN) is one of four Regional Cancer Networks in New Zealand established to implement the NZ Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan 2005-2010. The plan has two main aims - to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer and reduce the inequalities with respect to cancer.

The regional networks are focused on improving the journey of cancer patients and their family/whānau through the complex pathway of care. This is achieved by sharing knowledge, building capability and capacity, reducing inequalities and striving to achieve 'better, sooner, more convenient' services.

The website provides advice on healthy eating, smoking cessation and being sunsmart as well as information about specific cancers including breast, prostate and cervical. It also details the various initiatives the SCN is involved with and it will soon be expanded to include a comprehensive consumer-orientated directory of all cancer services available in the South Island.

The SCN represents and works across all areas of the cancer continuum: Southern Region DHBs, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), GPs and Primary Health Organisations (PHOs), cancer service providers, cancer consumers and their family/whānau, hospices, and research organisations.
