Tobacco tax rise helps smokers to quit

The PHO welcomes the government's budget to continue increases in tobacco excise, as part of plans for NZ to be Smokefree by 2025.

The PHO recognises the price increases won't be easy for smokers, but help to quit is available. Smokers who want help in taking this opportunity to give up smoking should contact their West Coast medical centre, rural clinic or pharmacist and ask about Coast Quit.

Coast Quit is the West Coast's very own smoking cessation programme, comprising both pharmaceutical and moral support for those wishing to stub out their addiction.

Previous price increases have amplified demand for the smoking cessation support the PHO funds, and the further increases announced in the budget are expected to be no different.
