When Will It End - Seventh Medicine Recall For 2010

There has been another patient level recall of one batch of Novo Nordisk's GlucaGen® Hypokit 1mg injection. The affected batch number is YW60459. This batch has been in circulation since 3 September 2010 and it is believed there are over 2,800 of the injections in circulation.

"This is the seventh recall for 2010" said Annabel Young, Chief Executive of the Pharmacy Guild. "Luckily for pharmacists, prescribers will be responsible for contacting patients to whom they have directly supplied Hypokits. The work for pharmacists will be managing the replacement process".

GlucaGen® Hypokit 1mg injection is used for the treatment of hypoglycaemia. The recall is because some vials of powder for injection supplied with this particular batch may be broken or cracked.

Pharmacists should keep a record of their time and costs in doing the recall and are advised that they should send a bill to Novo Nordisk for the recall service provided at the company's request.

The Guild has a key role in the current Ministerial review of the medicines recall process and continues to argue that pharmacists must be recompensed for the work involved in such recalls.
