424 entries for first Marlborough Wine Show

The inaugural Marlborough Wine Show has received 424 entries including 140 Sauvignon Blancs and 76 Pinot Noirs. Being judged on Thursday and Friday of this week the 1st and 2nd of September, both these classes are being split by vintage and sub-region to start to develop an understanding of sub-regional influences, wine styles and how the wines are developing in bottle.

Organisers, Wine Competition Ltd have decided to award trophies in each class rather than seek out just one wine for overall varietal trophies. For Sauvignon Blanc, there are four different classes: 2011, 2010, 2009 and older and 'emerging styles' - each of these classes will award a trophy as long as there is at least one wine scoring a minimum of18.5 - equivalent to a gold medal or in the case of this show, a wine judged as 'excellent'. There will also be a Champion Wine of the Show.

Local and national businesses have been keen to get involved with sponsoring the trophies and include WineWorks Marlborough Ltd, Bayleys Marlborough, Ormond Nurseries Ltd, Macvine Ltd, winejobsonline Ltd, Regal Marlborough Salmon and Tasman Crop Ltd.

Following both days' judging, members of the local wine industry are invited to taste the wines between 5pm and 6pm in exchange for a gold coin donation in aid of Marlborough Riding for the Disabled. After the Friday tasting there will be an auction of unopened bottles of wine that were not required during judging. Proceeds will be returned to the local wine industry via a Charitable Trust set up for this purpose.
