As we approach the most romantic weekend of the year, online travel agent Webjet.co.nz has identified a 68% surge in the potential number of ‘girl’s getaways’ over the Valentine’s Day weekend.

Local stats reveal that female travellers are booking more group trips over the Valentine’s week than ever before, highlighting how New Zealanders are seemingly embracing the growing Galentine’s Day trend. For the uninitiated, Galentine’s Day was first introduced to our screens 10 years ago and is now widely celebrated as a day dedicated to friendships.

David Galt, CEO Webjet OTA, said the trend could be a sign that 2019 is going to be a big year for ‘buddy breaks’ as group trips are on the rise, even during the most romantic time of the year.

"It seems Valentine’s Day is no longer a ‘couples only’ holiday and at Webjet, we’ve seen a 68% uplift in female group bookings compared with this time last year. It could be that the Galentine’s trend is now gaining global status after the phrase was first coined in 2010.

"Interestingly, we’ve also seen a 78% surge in group bookings overall for this period as people are flocking to long haul destinations such as London, Bali and LA to make the most of the quieter back to school period."

Tropical party destinations such as Malaysia, Bali and Thailand remain high on the list for Valentine’s trips, and hot spots Sapporo and Tokyo are also on the agenda, underpinning Japan’s status as a firm favourite for Kiwis in 2019.

Love is however, still in the air for couples, on the 14th of February, although Webjet.co.nz data shows that traditional romantic destinations such as Rome and Paris did not top the search list. Instead, lovers have been looking for more local getaways - such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in 2019.

"With highly competitive prices, it’s more affordable than ever for Kiwis to find romantic destinations close to home. It’s perhaps no surprise that Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne and Sydney have come out on top as the nation’s favourite city destinations; offering some of the world’s finest food and wine, right on our doorstep!

"There’s still time to book a last minute getaway for this Valentine’s Day using our handy deal finder tool, or to give the gift of travel this Valentine’s Day with Webjet eGift cards."
