Renowned for her delightful depictions of Tiwi Island life, artist and author Debbie Coombes has launched her first children’s book, "Going to the Footy", the perfect gift for Dads this Father’s Day. It is out this month through Magabala Books, Australia's Indigenous publisher.

About the different modes of transport that get you to the Footy, Debbie has written this book in a style that young ones will love. They will become besotted by the traditional Tiwi art Debbie is famous for, in this book she paints barges, cars, tinnys, troopies, buses and other ways the family can get to their beloved footy!

The book will make for a special bonding experience with Dad this September 1 as child and parent read the book together.

Going to a football game is not only a huge part of the Tiwi culture, but Debbie's upbringing. Says Coombes, "As a little girl, I played a lot of footy with the boys after school on our footy oval or anywhere we could."

Everyone loves the game of footy. It is part of who we are as Tiwi people and in fact, this year marks 50 years since footy has started on the Islands. We have grown up knowing the sport as little toddlers all the way to adulthood. If we are not playing, we are supporting our individual teams."

"I hope this book will inspire young children and families to share more time together whether it is going to the footy, hunting, ceremonies or just doing fun things together. I hope children will want to share their stories by illustrating books of their own and be very proud to do so."

Going to the Footy is now available from all good booksellers. www.magabala.com for more information.
