What do you think has happened to the Santa on Queen St, Auckland?

Interested passers-by will notice Santa, although standing tall and proud on top of the Whitcoulls Corner, has also acquired a massive towel, securely wrapped around his head, accompanied by the somewhat anti-climactic sign “All will be revealed 22 November, 1.30pm.”
 
Now personally, I’m not sure if we will be seeing Santa on some terrorist video shortly, pleading for his life through the confines of his towel, or whether much less interestingly he has only acquired an embarrassing fake tan and is simply trying to get the orange out before his big reveal.
 
Mind you, Santa has been looking very decrepit in his old age, if the one black I’m-going-to-kill-you-in-your-sleep devil eye and the one scarily-happy-old-man twinkly blue eye of last year was anything to go by.
He also had a how-not-to-do-plastic-surgery face, not to mention that lecherous beckoning finger...
 
Hey, maybe he got Botox?
 
I remember him on the Mall in Manukau that is now the Westfield- he really didn’t seem as terrifying back then, but now, to be perfectly frank, the guy kind of freaks me out.
 
However, in the Heart of Auckland poll last year an overwhelming majority of Aucklanders voted to keep Santa, so obviously there is some hope for the Christmas spirit yet. I will be going down on Sunday to see what they’ve done to the poor bugger.
If it’s too disturbing there’s always the rats in the Smith and Caughey’s Christmas window to look at.
 
And for those hoping they aren’t going to change him too much from the (in theory) successful Santa of the last 49 years, well, at least it can’t get any worse, right?
 
What do you think? Should he stay or should he go? Should they shove Rudolph up there instead?
