This is a strange blog. I’m supposed to write about travel...but it seems there is limited information out there in cyberspace about being pregnant in regional New Zealand. Well let me tell you, I did my research before I came back, I called, I emailed, I checked with friends, I asked around.........it seems New Zealand is one of the best and most supportive places in the world to have a child.

Let’s begin with your LMC or lead maternity Carer. In New Zealand (providing your a resident or citizen or whatever) the government subsidizes all your care. Basically your midwife or doctor (doctor if you live in a very small town) is free! Scans and ultrasounds are subsided at $40 NZD a hit (compare this to $177AUD for my scans when I lived in Australia and $60AUD for the doctors appointment with medicare rebate!). All other healthcare while your pregnant is more or less free - dental excluded. I have had to have physiotherapist visits at Nelson Hospital and these are also free. Nelson has some excellent independent midwifes:

Midwifes provide help and care for up to six weeks after the birth of the baby. After that they recommend you to either Plunket 03 5484765 or 0800 933 922  7am till midnight, 7 days or in Nelson the Te Korowai Trust 03-547 5958.

Apparently the majority of people living in Nelson live 20 minutes away from the public hospital. Nelson Hospital www.nmdhb.govt.nz/Maternity.aspx have an excellent website and very modern facilities. There is just one water birthing pool but apparently never a clash to be had.

Antenatal classes are free at the hospital but the waiting list is long and they are often full. Antenatal Education for Young Parents 03 546 9029 has a wealth of information. The Nelson District Parents Centre 03 546 9224 offers courses for $150 or $110 with community services card discount. The Parent Centre has groups of about thirteen couples and arranges post birth coffee groups and baby massage classes. They also have a woman who comes to offer advice about car seats. There are two or three places in Nelson who do car seat hire, Plunket which is between $20-$50 hireage for six months, Baby On The Move nelson@babyonthemove.co.nz who do a whole range of supplies, temporary or permanent or Te Korowai Trust

Nelson also offers a wide range of healthy options and services for pregnant women. Body Power www.bodypower.co.nz offer pregnancy yoga for $10 on a Friday morning commencing at 10.00am. The Yoga Space http://homepages.xnet.co.nz/~rodwatson/ have prenatal yoga available at different times in the evenings for $15 per session or a package rate. Body Flex also have a class on Wednesdays at 4.00pm www.rosiehollandyoga.com/bodyflex.htm

Riverside Pool have aquanatal classes http://www.clmnz.co.nz/riverside/aquatics/ for $7 on Mondays and Wednesdays. Classes also include a cup of tea afterwards and the chance to meet other pregnant ladies.
