The year is 2005. You Tube is founded, Pope John II dies, and Britney Spears wins her first Grammy Award and in New Zealand Fat Freddy’s Drop scoop the New Zealand Music Awards.

But more importantly Chapel Bar and Bistro opens its doors on Ponsonby Road.

Hailed as an immediate success, the famous corner site that originally housed the infamous Ivan’s and Anglesea Grill (one of the only restaurants on the strip in the mid 80’s), Chapel roared in to action.

Since then rock stars, sports stars and a host of national and international names have passed through the doors. However it’s the ‘locals’, who make this local.

There’s no seven-year itch for Chapel. Owner Luke Dallow says they have been "creating miracles since 2005" and the multi award- accolades, as well as the strong local commitment to its punters has seen the bar host a variety of successful functions and events.

From introducing the LBD party to Auckland in 2006 the bar has held a further 8 of these and it is an event that is synonymous with Chapel.

Other parties such as: Sex and the City, annual winter Snow party, Lock n’ Key parties, The Bachelor and Bachelorette Party where we crowned the Ponsonby Bachelor and Bachelorette of 2011, annual Valentines Day parties, The annual Christmas Mistletoe Party, have all been the bars top events.

But it’s not just the entertainment.

Last week Luke checked the till records. "We have has sold 150,745 pizzas, at 30cm per pizza laid out next to each other that’s 4500 kilometers. From a small pub on the corner in Ponsonby that’s a pretty awesome effort!" he said.

Today the birthday celebrations begin with all tap beer prices reverting to 2005 prices from midday-6pm.

Later in the day we’re rolling out the red carpet and at 5.30pm we’ll be giving away 100 glasses of Piper Heidsieck along with a George FM live broadcast by Thane Kirby as Luke releases seven red helium balloons into the Ponsonby air.

Each balloon has a prize voucher inside it with great prizes, such as:

- A $5K Diamond ring from Diamonds on Richmond

- Two balloons have a Grabaseat flight vouchers worth $200 each

- A Storm wardrobe worth $500

- A return cruise for two to Waiheke with Fullers

- A bottle of Piper Heidseick

- A $500 Chapel bar tab

Balloons have to be caught and brought into Luke at Chapel with the voucher inside and are redeemable up until 24 December 2012.
