Clean Up Our Beaches

Here is a great idea for the weekend. Join a pile of other people on a boat trip to Great Barrier and spend the day cleaning up the Great Barrier coastline. The weather will be  perfect and timing spot on after all the holiday makers have enjoyed their summer holidays and accidentally ( we hope) left rubbish behind!

On Friday 3 and Saturday 4 Sustainable Coastlines along with other groups and local Maori have organised for schools and volunteers to collect plastic that has drifted from the Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf out to Barrier’s beaches.

“The idea is simple: with help from as many people as possible in all areas of the community to help clean up the coastline and then conduct an analysis of the rubbish to use as recycling education which will be specifically aimed at young people. This has been inspired by The Sir Peter Blake Trust and their “Care For Our Coast” campaign, and will be using their educational system that provides valuable information about the state of our coastlines.”

The Friday ferry is already full, but there is still room on Saturday’s ferry.

The boat departs Quay Street ferry terminal at 8am on Saturday and returns at 7.30pm on Sunday.  Return ferry only $40 per person and includes camping for free, plus an epic party to celebrate.
