The term 'cougar' is fast becoming a part of the vernacular as women are feeling empowered by role models such as Demi Moore and Courtney Cox in her upcoming Tv series Cougar Town or whatever its called. Truth is, any guy (or 'cub', short for younger guy who goes out with a cougar for an extended period of time) that tries to be with a cougar better have toned arm muscles because he'll find himself trying to carry years of her baggage with him.
Air New Zealand have found themselves in hot water with an ad possibly inspired by my previous blog post found here or by the upcoming Courtney Cox TV series Cougar Town or whatever its called. Either way, the trouble with the ad can be found here. This is what sparked it all. Air New Zealand, trying to be progressive and satirical, have done a fantastic job but unfortunately the public aren't on the same wavelength.
The ad in itself is quite clever, but the weak uproar is not. The article states that “Now they've ruffled the feathers of women's rights groups and rape prevention organisations with a risque online promotion portraying the mating habits of the mature single woman.” Now, after watching the ad, wouldn't you be thinking the only person at risk of being raped is the man, so desperate to flee from the clutches of the cougar he has to act gay? The man in this clip must be an experienced cougar handler, he knows that a few hook-ups with her and he'll fall for all the trimmings and trappings of life with a cougar, cooked meals, washing done, experienced sex and what not, but he also knows that life with a cougar is hell.
Her house is so cluttered with baggage that he can do no right and only all wrong. He knows anything he says will be calculated once over in her head (without logic, mind you) and made out to be wrong due to her past, with decent men, she shunned because she deep down, longs for the twisted old spinster lifestyle her gaggle of friends won't let her live, hence she must look for a man no matter what the cost. The cougar isn't all about sex, she's about empowerment through self loathing, she's about winning through countless past losses, she's about conquering a smart, fetish driven and good looking young guy because men her own age won't look twice at her. She's a train wreck mentally and a really ruffled shirt physically, what with all the wrinkles and saggy genitalia.
Any who, after my assumptive ranting, Air New Zealand did a great job with the ad, they are progressive and well ahead of their time with the cougar culture. Shame that it has to take an American sitcom to make a subculture culturally acceptable.
