Expedia On The Up-And-Up In New Zealand Online Travel Market

As it marks its third year since launching a website in New Zealand, Expedia.co.nz, when combined with Expedia.com, in September achieved the largest traffic market share amongst the online travel agencies category, totaling a combined 13.8% market share and sitting in the number 1 position, according to September Hitwise figures*.

Since its launch in October 2007, Expedia.co.nz has steadily gained market share, seeing growth particularly in domestic travel and travel within the Pacific region. However, in the flights segment, Expedia.co.nz's biggest growth is coming from travel to international destinations. In the hotel market, 10 out of the 20 markets with the highest YoY growth are New Zealand domestic destinations.

The company's road to success was further solidified when Expedia eliminated all flight booking fees in late 2009, while earlier this year Expedia.co.nz eliminated all change and cancellation fees. As a result, to date, Expedia estimates it has saved its New Zealand customers almost $1 million NZD in flight booking fees alone.

Expedia has invested considerably in the New Zealand market over the past 12 months, most notably substantially increasing its domestic hotel inventory, launching its first-ever television and cinema advertising campaign in New Zealand and most recently appointing Tori Calver as the company's Auckland-based Market Manager for New Zealand.

Nicolas Chu, General Manager - Expedia Australia & New Zealand, comments, "We are well on our way to achieving our goal to be the single best place for New Zealanders to book their travel online and we are committed to cementing our position as the market leader in New Zealand.

"We believe we offer New Zealand consumers better value and unparalleled choice with more than 120,000 hotels, up to 180 airlines, top car hire brands and access to thousands of attractions," he said.

Expedia believes there is potential for significant growth in the region and, in particular in New Zealand, as online usage increases and more and more purchases are made online.
