Talk about dangling the carrot......now I'm not a donkey (maybe an ass....) but somebody out there wants us to be healthy......and its really cool! Little old Nelson has over five hundred fruit and nut trees available for public pilfering. But what is even cooler is there is a website with maps and locations of how to access this amazing bounty..and Im not just talking apples either. The website shows the location of walnuts, figs, olives, feijoas, grapes, pears, artichokes, blackberries, citrus, chilean guavas, some herbs: lavender, lovage, thyme and the list goes on. Now I dont even know what some of this stuff is, and I don't care...I'm going to pick it anyway!

But the question remains, who, what, when and why?

From my very basic understanding this ingenious plan is an open collaborative to get Nelson healthier. Council owned fruit trees are of course available to the public but private gardens have also been volunteered. Go to the map (it takes a few seconds to load up), click on your fancy and find out just how and when to access the fresh fruit or nut. Brilliant! Fresh fruit and vege for anybody, anytime.

The website can be found at  http://www.healthyas.org.nz/fresh-foods/open-orchards/
