It’s called whizky. And, no, that’s not a misprint. But it is a clue to the spirit’s unique ingredient, urine.
No ordinary wee will do, either.
James Gilpin, a UK-based scientist, has invented a "public engagement tool" to distil diabetic wee into whisky, or "whizky", as he likes to call it.
“It’s not for sale but I am giving it away at exhibitions and festivals," he told relaxnews last week.
Type-2 diabetics, particularly the elderly, excrete large amounts of sugar every day, he says. The sugar act as nutrients for mould and bacteria growth.
“It only takes a couple of weeks to make a batch but it's best if it is left in the bottle for a little while."
Ultimately, Gilpin hopes to use the experiment find out if water purification systems could “harvest the biological resources that our elderly already process in abundance".
In the meantime, if you're feeling brave, cheers!
