There are millions of reasons to be happy this time of year in the Gold Coast. Some of them are free and some of them are steep, whatever the cost they can all be found at the Gold Coast Turf Club.

January is the season for racing in this part of the world and despite the economic woes its never been busier. If your looking for something cheap to do then head to the stables before the offical races. Its free to enter and anybody can go and check out the 1100 or so horses that are up for auction.

This year the horses went  from a staggering 2 000 000AUD down to 12 000AUD. Take the kids and wander around the stables, pat the horses or if you've got a dollar or two take a bid. But be warned the average price for a horse at the 2009 auction was 100 000AUD.

Bidding for a yearling at auction can be just as exciting as winning a punt, but for most its the race that thrills. Although the 2009 entry price rose to $25AUD more than 15 000 people attended with about 900 people entering the fashion in the field event.

The Magic Millions have sold more Group One winners and more high class racehorses than others in the thoroughbred sales field. More information can be found at
