Hastings residents are being encouraged to enter a national competition to decide which street is the best dressed during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The competition will see groups of neighbours join together and enter into the spirit of the global rugby extravaganza by decorating their homes to welcome the thousands of international visitors who will arrive on our shores.

Residents are being encouraged to hang bunting over their house, fence and garage, put up flags of the competing countries and hang streamers, balloons and coloured lights. The best dressed street in the country will win a catered party for 50 neighbours, including a BBQ, non-alcoholic drinks, a marquee and a band or DJ to provide the entertainment.

Mayor Lawrence Yule says "this is a real chance for Hastings residents to show their pride in being kiwi. The Rugby World Cup is the biggest sporting event to be held in New Zealand and we all must take ownership of the look of our city."

"Teaming up with neighbours to make your street look special during the Rugby World Cup is a great community activity and will help foster pride in our city" Mr Yule says.

Groups must involve four or more consecutive houses in the one street and once decorated, up to four photos can be uploaded onto the best dressed street facebook website as part of the entry.

The national winner's street party will be held on Saturday October 15th, to coincide with the World Cup semifinals.

Entries to the Best Dressed Street competition close on Friday September 23rd and entry forms are available on line at
