LATE at the Museum: Lust

What do you lust for? Sex? Deviancy? Power?

The September LATE at Auckland Museum looks set to be one of the most-talked about sessions of its Seven Deadly Sins 2012 season, as it focuses on one of the most talked about Sins.

Moderator Russell Brown will talk with journalist David Farrier, Not Safe For Work author and blogger Emma Hart and D.VICE owner and author Ema Lyon about this sin – a debate I’m really looking forward to from these panellists.

The Marquis De Sade said:  “Lust is to the other passions what the nervous fluid is to life; it supports them all, lends strength to them all - ambition, cruelty, avarice, revenge, are all founded on lust.”

Dave Mustaine (yes, of Megadeth fame) has a slightly different point of view “The Bible and several other self help or enlightenment books cite the Seven Deadly Sins. They are: pride, greed, lust, envy, wrath, sloth, and gluttony. That pretty much covers everything that we do, that is sinful... or fun for that matter.” Which is pretty much the conclusion my friend and I came to when we attended last month’s Sin – Gluttony. If it’s fun, it’s probably a sin...

For those that haven’t been to the LATES previously, the debate will start at approximately 7pm, after which there is live entertainment – this month from “Cabaret Birdesque comedy” troupe Birds of Paradise, as well as a performance from Indie band Watercolours, comprised of Chelsea Jade Metcalf.  Her recent track "Nightswimmer" was voted best unreleased track for June 2012 on theaudience.co.nz

Guests will also be invited to wander the Museum with collection manager Siren Deluxe, who will give a talk on the Museum’s “Lustful Objects.”

The LATES are a great opportunity to get a little dressed up and head out with a group of friends or with a partner to experience atmosphere, culture...and possibly debauchery, given this month’s topic. I find Auckland Museum’s LATES are always great value for money –with both an interesting debate and excellent performances for only $20, this is a recommended event.
