McDonald's celebrates Kiwiana in style

Twenty years on from its invention by a McDonald's Hamilton franchisee, the Kiwiburger is back on the Macca's menu across the country.

One of McDonald's most requested burgers, the Kiwiburger is joined in the Kiwiana-inspired menu by the new Kiwi Pav, Frozen L&P and the Kiwi Brekkie McMuffin.

McDonald's New Zealand Managing Director Mark Hawthorne says with McDonald's is celebrating 35 years of being part of Kiwis' lives this year and the new menu additions are another reflection of the company's appreciation for its customers.

"We are aiming to showcase all things Kiwi at a time when patriotism is high and New Zealand is hosting people from around the world. The Kiwiburger is always a favourite when we put it on the menu, and of course the Kiwi Pav is very much a part of our culture. The Kiwi Brekkie McMuffin represents everything we like in a breakfast, and while putting the new Frozen L&P on the menu during winter is a little unconventional, that's the way Kiwis are," he says.

"With 80 percent of McDonald's restaurants being owned by local business men and women, and our huge support of Kiwi farmers, bakers, growers, fisheries and food suppliers across the country, McDonald's is very much part of New Zealand. We wanted to showcase this by offering something uniquely Kiwi to our local and international customers alike," says Mr Hawthorne.

First launched in 1991, the Kiwiburger combines classic ingredients including the 100% New Zealand beef patty, fresh lettuce and tomato, onion and cheese, with a fresh egg and beetroot.

The Kiwi Brekkie McMuffin packs an egg, potato rosti, rasher bacon, sausage patty, cheese, relish and mayo into a toasted McMuffin. The Kiwi Pav is topped with soft serve ice cream and a pineapple and lime sauce. McDonald's will also be the first place New Zealanders get to try Frozen L&P.

Other Kiwi-inspired menu items will also feature on the menu next month, but are being kept under-wraps.
