The public is invited to pick up a shovel and help transform the look of an area of the Clive River stopbank on the Hastings to Clive iWay route this Sunday.

400 trees are to be planted along the stopbank on a piece of land which was previously neglected and has only recently been opened up to public access due to the construction of a new pathway.

The planting day will begin with a blessing of the site and then a Kaumatua will give a brief history of the area. Representatives of the Forest and Bird Protection Society will also speak before its all hands to the shovels and the planting will begin.

Whakatu resident Aki Paipper says "The pathway has already transformed the community and we are meeting new neighbours every day. Some planting has taken place and this has made the pathway just that much more stunning. This Sunday's planting day is a real chance for the community to get behind this project and create an area that everyone can be really proud of."

Aki Paipper says" Even though there is more work to be done before the pathway is completed, it has already become popular with walkers and cyclists."

Everyone is invited to the planting day which will be held this Sunday June 17th from 9am. Parking will be available at Cavalier Woolscourers (Tuckers) on State Highway 2 near Clive. You should bring a shovel, a bucket and some drinking water.
