Butchers and manufacturers around the country are testing and tasting their sausage recipes in preparation for the 2011 Devro New Zealand Sausage Competition.

Entries are now open giving everyone, from local butchers to multi-million dollar corporates, an equal chance to claim the supreme prize and have their sausages named the best in New Zealand.

Retail Meat New Zealand representative, Kim Doran, says the competition has reached new heights with both industry and consumers eagerly anticipating the competition. "With sausages regularly appearing on dinner tables in many New Zealand homes, promoting excellence in this industry is great for both entrants and the public in terms of producing top quality sausage products."

There are 12 categories in the competition which means all sausages, from traditional beef to gourmet sausages with unique flavour combinations, can be showcased. Mystery shoppers will be sent out in late October, picking up entries and ensuring the sausages are available to anyone, anytime. The judging will be held between 2 - 4 November involving butchers, foodwriters, chefs and celebrities, who will all help to determine the category winners and the Supreme Award winner.

The competition, sponsored by Devro, Kerry Ingredients and Alto Packaging, has been running in New Zealand for 18 years.
