Grey skies are gonna clear up…
A friend and I have long laboured under the assumption that we both suffer from Seasonal Depression. When winter rolls around, we usually become Homo sapiens of the not speaking, occasionally moving-for-the-sole-purpose-of-foraging-for–Burger-King variety.
This usually lasts until the sun begins to have less of an aesthetically pleasing, decorative effect and becomes more of an active participant in the concept of solar warmth.
The difference between my friend and I is that this year she got off her butt (not that she’s constantly on it, but let’s pretend for the sake of the blog).
She got out of her
Snuggie, put on something other than track pants, and went boldly forth into the cold grey light of winter…and accomplished a lot.
Where as I, had I been as proactive and positive as she, might have actually completed a few of the goals I’m now past my personal deadline to complete.
Instead, I looked at what I needed to do, assessed what I needed to do against how long it was going to take and how cold I was going to be doing it…and crawled back into bed with my electric blanket on 3.
Repeat ad infinitum, or until the power bill skyrockets.
I also moaned a lot about my six broken umbrellas, my freezing apartment, my cold nose, scaly dry hands and the fact that everyone else in my building takes a shower at 6pm, so the water is lukewarm. (Solution: Wait till 7pm, when everyone else is watching Shortland Street.)
As of last week, about the time the skies started to be blue instead of going for The Perfect Storm Audition look, I emerged blinking into the sunlight….quite frankly thinking, “Shit, what have I been doing the last three months?”
I even sat down to review my winter, so concerned was I about losing three months of my life this year.
Ready?
Television: I watched a lot of this. Unfortunately nothing in particular sticks to mind except Fringe, which is a steadily improving knock off of The X-Files, except with more science and blonde people.
Low point: Flavour of Love. Absolutely guilty of watching this on at least two occasions. Haven’t been able to figure out the logic of this, other than obviously I have some kind of (very, very) deep-seated attraction to guys with horns on their heads, and very likely none in their pants.
Museum: I went to the Auckland Museum for their LATE lectures.
I gained knowledge.
Said knowledge has since left my head, but I may be able to get it back when the lectures start again on September 3.
High point: Being able to grasp the concept of a Dunbar number.
Random Events: There was rugby on at some point, wasn’t there?
The Comedy Fest, The International Film Fest, My Fair Lady, Cats. I went to most of these, and the sad thing is can only remember in great detail how cold it was outside while waiting to go in.
High Point: The excellent amount of stuff coming up! Green Day (rock) , The Black Eyed Peas (dance) , La Sylphide (ballet) , Mamma Mia (musical), Godskitchen (awesomeness).
Movies: I have seen almost no girl movies this winter. The most recent example of this switch to the dark side is when I went to see G.I. Joe…and enjoyed it.
High point: Am looking forward to the ones coming up: My Sister’s Keeper, The Time Traveller’s Wife.
Low point: Still haven’t bucked the action/ adventure trend as I’m booked to see District 9 today.
Books: This is where I got into trouble this winter. The temptation to curl up with a good book was often too great for me to conquer, and I blame, in particular:
My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult, The Gunseller, by Hugh Laurie, House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, The Last American Man, by Elizabeth Gilbert, and Fight Club, by Chuck Palahniuk,
Low point: Small Giants: Companies That Choose to be Great Instead of Big, by Bo Burlingham.
There’s nothing wrong with the book. It’s more that I read it in a state of panic after realising that the winter slow season might be a good time to advance my career…from what I can discern I still have a career, although the book may or may not have helped in this.
Overall High Point: I haven’t gained as much weight as I was expecting to. (The
Pita Pit has a lot to do with this)
Overall Low Point: However, the imminent threat of The Bikini is now hanging over my head.
Also the whole Doing Nothing Thing. But now that it’s sunny for a lot higher percentage of the time, I feel I will be able to accomplish what I could have accomplished had I not been struck by The Winter Blues and the compelling instinct to hibernate for three months (maybe I’m part bear.)
What were your highs and lows? At least Spring is a week away, and as we all know, “Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!" ~Robin Williams.
Welcome to Spring, everybody.

Hi, Samantha. Sorry that Small Giants was a low point for you. You might get more out of the new global Small Giants Community: www.smallgiantscommunity.com
Cheers, Bo Burlingham
Hi, Bo. Thank you for your
Hi, Bo.
Thank you for your comment-I did actually immensely enjoy the book, the low point came when said book earned me more mojo points than brownie points :) Such is life.
The website and mailing list does look promising, unfortunately I will be unable to attend the special gathering of the new, international Small Giants Community in Washington D.C. as my FlyBuys points are very low. Will have to work on my mojo in Auckland!
Cheers,
Samantha Lee
How did you enjoy Cats?!
How did you enjoy Cats?!
Oh, that was the one I
Oh, that was the one I desperately wanted to see but budget cuts forced me to abandon the idea:) Next time. (sigh)
Is that that thing they were
Is that that thing they were making fun of on Rove! Not as good as the 'Snuggle Sack' which can be converted into a blanket :D
winter=dumb
Yes, I think so! Winter=
Yes, I think so! Winter= terrible. But spring on Tuesday!
Hey, cool blog!
Hey, cool blog! Congratulations on mastering the Dunbar number - I would cling to that. Maybe I'm missing something, but are snuggies for real or are they a joke? Because they look pretty darn good - not only can you keep warm and cozy, but they also make you look like a wizard. Frankly, I can't think of anything more ideal.
And by the way, congratulations on reading "The Fight Club"!!! Not only does Chuck Palahnuik have a hilarious name, but his books are pretty awesome - check out "The Diary" and "Survivor" - they are some other goodies from him!
P.S - I award you one green thumbs up! (It's sort of like the Blog Grammy)
Thanks! Snuggies are totally
Thanks! Snuggies are totally for real; I don't own one, but a friend does and it's fabulously awesome. Thanks, I will check out his other ones- I went searching for Thomas Moore today, only to realise that he is a self-help author, and I was really looking for Thomas MORE.Yikes.
Cheers for the thumbs up, I think I need all the help I can get this week:)
There I just gave you one
There I just gave you one more thumbs up! What`s up with all the haters?!?!?! lol
I always post my blogs to my Facebook so that my "friends" (or other random acquaintances who added me - probably so they can stalk me) can give me thumbs ups... however I think this is where most of my thumbs downs come from hahahaha.
Hah, thank you for the
Hah, thank you for the thumbs up- must start a facebook page, although this may result in a lot more negatives:) At least people are exercising their right to an opinion...which is what I tell myself while eating a massive bowls of cookies n cream icecream:)
