Sweet Result For Riverby

Marlborough winery Riverby Estate  continued a run of perfect results when their 2009 Noble Riesling won the trophy for Champion Sweet Wine at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards.

The previous vintage had won a Trophy for Champion Sweet Wine of Australia and New Zealand; the first time this had ever been won by a New Zealand wine.

The Riverby vineyard has a long history of producing trophy winning sweet wines. This will however take a break with the 2010 vintage as no sweet wine was produced.

There are several methods of producing sweet wines, but Riverby uses the traditional premium method which depends on botrytis, or "noble rot" as it is often called, occurring. The 2010 vintage while producing a string of exceptional wines from the Riverby vineyard was not conducive to botrytis. Things are looking promising for 2011 though with a special block already "rotting" nicely.
