With extra buses now running between Hastings and Napier, World Car Free Day on Thursday 22 September is an ideal day to leave the car at home and catch a bus.

Hawke's Bay Regional Council and Go Bus have increased the number of buses on Route 12 between Hastings and Napier.

There is now a bus service every 15 minutes in peak times and every 30 minutes in off-peak times. The first services depart at 6.30 am making it easy to get to work on time.

"It's never been easier to get around Napier and Hastings by bus, so try it on World Car Free Day ... you might like it," says Council's transport manager, Carol Gilbertson.

Mrs Gilbertson says that the early morning and evening commuter services are another popular option. Although these services are less frequent, they have fewer stops so are faster. And if there's no bus near you, you can always cycle or walk instead of hopping in the car.

World Car Free day is celebrated every year by encouraging people to get around without their car - making use of public transport, cycling and walking instead. Since the first World Car Free Day was celebrated in 2000, the event has grown to involve participants in more than 1000 cities in 40 countries.

Mrs Gilbertson says that the goBay buses are modern and comfortable, and many of them have easy access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. With more routes and services now, it is a practical option for more people. The smaller commuter buses also take no more time than travelling by car, once parking is taken into consideration.

"Taking the bus can be good for you - it takes a lot of hassle out of your day. There's no need to find or pay for a car park and you can relax and read or chat to other people. And at the other end, a short walk is a nice way to get to your destination," Mrs Gilbertson said.
