Villa Maria reigns dominant in Chardonnay again

For the fourth consecutive year, Villa Maria has taken out the Supreme Wine of the Show and Champion Chardonnay at the Gisborne Regional Wine Awards with its undisputedly high performing wine, the Reserve Barrique Fermented Chardonnay.

This is the second year on the trot for the same wine - the 2012 vintage with prior Supreme awards going to the 2009 and 2010 vintages.

Villa Maria’s award performance in the Chardonnay category is nothing short of extraordinary, with a sweep of top awards for this varietal in all their major regions over many years.

Most recently a Marlborough wine, the Single Vineyard Taylors Pass Chardonnay 2012 has been at the top of Cuisine tasting and Easter Show Awards 2014, and prior to that the iconic Hawkes Bay Single Vineyard Keltern Chardonnay 2012 took out the Exhibition Class Trophy at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2013. At the same show it was another Villa Maria Chardonnay, the Reserve Hawkes Bay 2012 that won Champion Chardonnay and Reserve Champion Wine of the Show.

Nick Picone, Villa Maria’s award winning Senior Winemaker spoke of the special place the Gisborne Barrique Fermented Chardonnay holds in the winery’s history: "The Reserve Barrique Fermented Chardonnay was a pioneering style at the time around 30 years ago, but it was also Villa Maria’s first Chardonnay under the Reserve label. From the early success with this wine, we’ve honed our skills in making extraordinary Chardonnay from Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Marlborough. It’s a variety we have passion for and it’s so rewarding to see that we consistently excel when it comes to winning awards".
