Villa Maria wins three consecutive Champion awards

The coveted Champion Wine of Show Award has now been bestowed on Villa Maria's Single Vineyard Keltern Chardonnay 2010 for three wine shows in a row; the most recent being at the Hawkes Bay A&P Wine Awards dinner last night.

In addition to the Wine of Show award this wine also received the Sustainability Trophy and the Chardonnay Trophy.

Previous shows where this wine made top billing was the New Zealand International Wine Show 2011 (2 trophies) and the Romeo Bragato Wine Awards 2011 (3 trophies).

Villa Maria Senior Winemaker Nick Picone said the performance of this wine is simply unprecedented, "This feat is quite possibly a first in the New Zealand wine industry. For one wine to win the top award in three consecutive shows is simply outstanding. Keltern Chardonny has a long history of success but this has to be the best yet. I know I'll be stocking up the cellar with a few bottles".

Other success for Villa Maria at the Hawkes Bay A&P Wine Awards included:

Viognier Trophy - Villa Maria Single Vineyard Omahu Gravels Viognier 2010

Other Premium Red Trophy - Villa Maria Reserve Malbec 2009

Villa Maria's Group Viticulturist Ollie Powrie was at the awards dinner held in Hawkes Bay: "The Hawkes Bay A&P Wine Awards is a long standing and respected show for Hawkes Bay wine producers to benchmark their wines in the industry. Villa Maria's success with Chardonnay in the region is well documented and we're thrilled to see its continuation. It's also pleasing to me that our very first Reserve release of a 100 per cent Malbec has done so well, and the lesser known but full of potential varietal Viognier," he said.
