Villa Maria's Gimblett Gravels wines excel at wine challenge

Villa Maria wines performed well at the Five Nations Wine Challenge, gaining four Double Golds as well as two Gold medals at the awards dinner held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney last Friday night.

The Villa Maria Reserve Hawkes Bay Merlot from the renowned wine-growing sub-region of Gimblett Gravels took Double Gold for its 2010 vintage and Gold for its 2009 vintage. Both the 2010 Syrah and the 2007 Grenache from the Villa Maria Reserve Gimblett Gravels Hawkes Bay range won Double Gold, reaffirming Villa Maria’s prowess across a range of red wine varietals. In addition, Villa Maria took out both the Double Gold and the Gold prize in the Sauvignon Blanc competition, with the Reserve Wairau Valley 2011 and the Single Vineyard Southern Clays 2011 respectively.

This annual competition involves top wines from New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, South Africa and Chile; with the USA set to join in 2013. It is an ‘invitation-only’ event, meaning that only wines that are pre-selected by the judges can be entered. New Zealand Master of Wine Bob Campbell invited Villa Maria to take part, and commented, "Because the wines are all pre-selected by each of the judges the standard of wine quality must surely be higher than any competition of this size in the world". This year, 540 wines were judged.
