If you don't know your tannins from your texture and what barrel fermentation is or does, then here's the chance to learn with a wine in hand and experts on tap at SummerSips, to be held at the Hawke's Bay Opera House this Sunday between 12 and 4pm.

Thirteen Hawke's Bay wineries are taking part in the inaugural event that is part of the Epicurious celebration of food, wine and entertainment, being held in Hastings this weekend.

The wineries will set up market style in the Plaza and for a $5 entry fee, visitors can taste wines and talk to the winemakers and winery cellar door staff on hand. Three wineries are also offering educational seminars to help wine drinkers appreciate and savour the aromas and flavours of their tipple.

Vidal Estate and Trinity Hill will be presenting simple workshops at 1pm and 2pm. "They will answer all the questions you have always wanted answered no matter how silly they sound to you," says Lyn Bevin, Hawke's Bay Winegrowers executive officer.

"We know our Hawke's Bay wineries are spread around the region and sometimes the distance and setting can be a little imposing to those just wanting to know a little more.

This is a fantastic opportunity for people to experience 13 of our leading wineries all in one place at one time and in an informal relaxed environment."

Interest appears keen with the Hawke's Bay Opera House team advising this event has attracted more hits on its website than anything else currently.

The winery line up includes Beach House, CJ Pask, Clearview Estate, Craggy Range, Dartmoor Road, Elephant Hill, Mills Reef, Paritua, Sacred Hill, Te Awa, Trinity Hill, Unison, and Vidal.

Entry to SummerSips is $5 and includes wine tastings, souvenir wine glass and seminars held at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Tickets are available on the day at the Plaza.
