'Best Christmas Ever' On Wish List For Six Million Dollar Man And Family

A hard working local Lynfield family man has this morning claimed his $6.5 million Lotto Powerball prize on behalf of his family syndicate.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, travelled to Wellington with a support crew of 12 family members, including syndicate members, and said he was looking forward to having "the best Christmas ever" this year.

"Once we found out we had won on Sunday afternoon, my wife decided to quit her job in order to focus on our family and we have made an appointment with the bank to pay off our mortgage tomorrow.

"It will be so nice for us to not worry about the bills any more", he said.

The winner has been very superstitious about buying his Lotto tickets for the family, always buying them at 5 pm from Countdown Lynfield on a Saturday and not checking them until the Sunday.

"It is my wife's job to check our family ticket numbers so she got a huge shock when the numbers on Teletext matched our ticket on Sunday morning. We did not believe it was real, so sent one of our daughters out to the shop to buy a Sunday paper just to double check it was actually happening to us. It is a dream come true.

"We have not got much sleep since finding out about the win. This will make our lives so much easier," he said.

First on their family's wish list is planning a fantastic Christmas for extended whanau.

But the family man winner has one other wish, "I've always wanted to go fishing, so Santa might bring me a boat this year," he said.

Other family syndicate members plan to use their winnings for further study or to pay off mortgages.
