Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she was concerned that the infestation of lake snow in Lake Wanaka could have implications for tourism and recreation users of the lake.

This lake is the jewel in Wanaka’s crown. It is an iconic part of the area which tourists flock to and which locals and holidaymakers enjoy year round.

"I am deeply concerned at the recent ecological changes, which include the discovery of lake snow.

"I would also like to see a lake management plan put in place to ensure that this waterway is monitored and protected into the future.

"The level of community concern regarding this issue is a pretty good indication to me of how precious this lake is to the people of Wanaka.

"I would be concerned if it was allowed to deteriorate further and will be watching closely to ensure that this issue is given the attention that it deserves."

Mrs Dean said a proposal to develop an Alpine Lakes Research and Education Centre in Wanaka was a a good move.

"A facility like that, to foster more research into Lakes Wanaka, Hawea and Wakatipu, is positive and proactive.

"It is also exciting to see groups like Fish and Game, Otago University, the Department of Conservation, the Guardians of Lake Wanaka and the newly formed Lake Wanaka Trust working together to maintain the health of the lake."
