Life Flight’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand this morning to help a man in his 20s who was experiencing a major medical event on a fishing vessel in Wellington. After a phone consultation with a doctor, it was determined the man required urgent care.

A Wellington Free Intensive-Care Paramedic was winched down to the patient to stabilise him before both were winched back into the helicopter by the Life Flight team. The patient was then transported to Wellington Regional Hospital in a stable condition.

Winching a person off a boat is one of the most complex types of winch operations. Our team trains frequently to be well-prepared for this type of callout.

The Life Flight Trust is a charity that provides emergency air services, including the Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a nationwide air ambulance service. It relies on support from the public and from partners such as major sponsor Westpac to provide these services. More information at www.lifeflight.org.nz.
