Struggle falling asleep last night? Struggle to stay asleep? The humid, warm weather overnight in northern New Zealand saw some places in the low to 20 mid 20s at midnight.

For those opening windows there hasn't been much of a breeze - plus flies and mosquitoes also causes issues for some sleepers.

Why is it so warm?

The airflow around northern New Zealand is now subtropical. With a large high east of New Zealand the anticyclonic flow around this high drifts up into the sub-tropics then back down over New Zealand, with those in the upper North Island most exposed to the warm air.

How long will this last?

Until Tuesday night, then a cold front crosses the country with heavy downpours and a switch to slightly more refreshing westerlies.

Until then, overnight lows in the north will mainly be between 18 and 22 degrees at the coldest part of the day.
