A quick trip to the supermarket to pick up some dog biscuits has left a young Auckland couple $1 million better off following Wednesday night’s Lotto draw.

The couple, who are in their 20s, were driving home from work on Wednesday when they remembered they needed to stop at the supermarket.

"We were both pretty tired from work and the last thing we felt like doing was going to a busy supermarket, but we needed to get some food for our new puppy, so I volunteered to go in and pick some up," said the winner.

After picking up some biscuits for man’s best friend, the winner was heading for the exit when he decided to grab a Lotto ticket as well.

"My partner and I have been saving to buy a new house for about a year now and when I walked past the Lotto counter I thought, ‘Why not try my luck and grab a Lotto ticket for tonight - you just never know!’"

Tucking his lucky Lotto ticket into his phone case, the man decided to surprise his partner with the ticket later that evening.

"It was about 10pm on Wednesday night when I turned to my partner and said ‘Go check the TV cabinet - there’s a bit of a surprise in there’. Little did I know just how much of a surprise it really would be," laughed the man.

Retrieving the Lotto ticket from the cabinet, the man and his partner went to bed to check their lucky ticket through the Lotto NZ App.

"As soon as I scanned the ticket through the App, ‘Major Prize’ appeared on my screen. I thought we might’ve won about $1,000, but then I remembered reading an article recently about a Lotto winner who also had the ‘Major Prize’ message pop up, so I decided we needed to check the numbers," said the winner.

Pulling up the winning Lotto numbers on his phone, the man and his partner started to check their ticket.

"We didn’t need to look far - all six winning numbers were on the first line of the ticket. We couldn’t believe it!" said the winner.

"We were even more blown away when we realised we’d won the whole $1 million outright - it was an incredible feeling! I think at that stage, we both started to get a bit teary-eyed", said the winner’s partner.

Desperate to share their good news, the couple called some close family and friends.

"Everyone was so happy for us. They kept saying ‘it just couldn’t have gone to nicer people,’ which was so lovely to hear," said the winner.

With the winnings now safely in their bank account, the couple already have a fair idea on how they will spend their prize.

"Buying a house is our number one priority - it’s all we have been talking about. Everyone dreams of winning Lotto, and we can’t quite believe it’s actually happened to us - we feel incredibly grateful," said the winner.

The winning ticket was sold at Countdown Takanini in Auckland for the Lotto draw on Wednesday 3 October.
