An initial reluctance to start studying again was transformed when Sue Fender realised that "a lot of the answers were in my heart. We do it all the time."

Fender is a healthcare assistant (HCA) from Waikato Hospice was one of 18 healthcare support workers who marked their graduation from the Level 3 Certificate in Health and Wellbeing programme at a ceremony on 16 October at the Waiora Waikato Hospital Campus in Hamilton.

Her comments were echoed by Waikato DHB Patient Quality and Safety director Mo Neville who acknowledged the difficulties of studying when working full time and while having family commitments, and the challenges of returning to study after entering the workforce. Neville also spoke of the valued contribution healthcare assistants and psychiatric assistants make to teams in providing excellent patient centred care.

All graduates were presented with their certificates by chief nursing and midwifery officer Sue Hayward, and recognised in speeches from senior Waikato DHB managers for their achievement.

Special awards were presented to Sue Fender (Hospice Waikato) and Liam Crotty (Corrections: Waikeria) in recognition of the provision of excellent person-centred care. Cheryl Tuck (Tokoroa Hospital) and Fa’ati (Fiona) Nandan (Ward 14, Waikato Hospital) received awards for their commitment to learning and development.

The certification programme was developed and delivered by the Professional Development Unit at Waikato DHB, in partnership with Careerforce NZ. It is a qualification recognised by NZQA is available to healthcare support workers employed by Waikato DHB and by organisations that have a contract with Waikato DHB, such as Hospice Waikato, Corrections Department, Lakes DHB and some private facilities.
