Marlborough District Council has begun water restrictions in Picton as the spate of hot, dry weather continues.

Low water levels in the Essons Valley Dam and a high demand for water means all households on the Picton water supply must now adhere to the following restrictions:

- A property with an even-numbered street address may use a sprinkler only on even-numbered calendar days.

- A property with an odd-numbered street address may use sprinklers only on odd-numbered calendar days.

- The term sprinkler means any hose which is not held and directed by hand. There is no restriction on hand-held hoses but residents are asked to limit their use wherever possible.

- Only one tap may be used at a time to run a sprinkler or sprinkler system.

- In the case of corner and double sections, the day relates to the street number displayed and used as the property’s address.

The restrictions will remain in place until further notice. If a property has no street number, one can be provided by the Council’s Assets and Services Department on application.

Council’s Operations and Maintenance Engineer Stephen Rooney says it’s important that everyone in Marlborough is mindful of their water use at this time.

"We know this is the time of the year when people want to irrigate lawns and gardens. We hope everyone does this in a responsible manner, observing the limits Council has put in place.

"We’re also encouraging people to adopt other water conservation habits. Every little bit helps," Stephen said.

- Don’t leave automatic irrigation systems running for long periods.

- If you have a timer on your irrigation system, irrigate at night between the hours of 10:00 pm and 5:00 am on your allocated irrigation day.

- Take short showers

- Fix leaks and dripping taps

- Wash clothes and dishes on full load

- Download the Council’s Antenno app to receive water alerts.
