A free, 6 week, course designed to break down barriers and help potential drivers pass the theory test for a learners licence will be available to people from the Hurunui.

The Learner Driver Mentor Programme is a New Zealand Police initiative intended to help people challenged by the learners’ licence theory test. The Hurunui Road Safety Committee is assisting our residents (of any age) in gaining access to this course - and they can even help with transport to and from the course with fuel vouchers if needed. Each course runs for 5 weeks, usually on a Thursday from 7.00pm to 8.30pm, and is held in the Rangiora Town Hall - in the conference room above the cinema. The next course starts on the 9th of May and applications close on the 26th of this month. However, there will be another course starting on the 25th of July. Kim Munro, Senior Constable with New Zealand Police, explained some of the reasoning behind the course. "This will not only help make the roads safer for all of us, but give the participants greater opportunities in the future to apply for jobs and have the independence and aspirations to improve their circumstances" she said. "Then they can also inspire those around them, who do not have a licence, to do the same".

Krystal Jennings, our Road Safety Co-ordinator, has said the Hurunui Road Safety Committee are happy to be able to help those that may have difficulty obtaining a learners licence. "This is a fantastic opportunity for us at HDC to support those in our Hurunui communities that feel they need a bit of extra mentoring to obtain their learner licences" she said. "We are happy to assist in getting to Rangiora with fuel vouchers, if that is a barrier for any of our residents, and if the current dates don’t suit, we would still like to hear from anyone interested".

Students to previously sit the course have said there were "good instructors" and they felt it was an "excellent course". Their testimonials have said things like "[the program] helped me learn and understand the rules" and "they let us practice theory tests and get feedback"
