Hamilton’s new fenced dog exercise area will be in Innes Common - and it will be operational by the end of June.

Through February and March, Hamilton City Council ran a three-week public consultation process, asking dog owners and the wider public to state their preference for where the fenced dog exercise area should go.

Staff in the Council’s Parks and Recreation Unit identified three parks which had already been deemed suitable in the Council’s Pooches in Parks plan, chosen as preferred options due to having off-street parking, public toilets and being easily accessible.

The parks were:

Innes Common.

Resthills Park.

Tauhara Park.

Of the approximately 1300 people who responded to the Council’s community engagement for the project, more than a third nominated Innes Common as their preference, citing its central location, easy access and the popularity of the park which they believed would make it a safer environment.

Staff will now begin work on a concept design for the fenced dog area (incorporating fountains and a picnic table, plus location of the fence), with work to begin in May.

Development of the new fenced dog exercise area is an outcome of the Council’s 2018-2018 10-Year Plan.
