The new playground area at the Esplanade in Whitianga is well on target for completion.

The new timber board walk (pictured) and the concrete path at the playground are almost finished.

This week the contractors continue to place the WAP40 subbase for the new scooter track around the playground. Soon after they will begin laying the new concrete.

They also continue to build the timber board walk along the hoggin path under the existing pine trees.

The contractors have secured 1.2-metre-high pedestrian barriers to isolate the construction area from pedestrians for health and safety purposes and they have provided safe, temporary access to driveways and footpaths for residents and businesses along the Esplanade.

All of the stakeholders will be notified of the date for when the kerb and channel is to be poured.

"The ongoing construction impact meetings have been very helpful. At the latest meeting on Monday 29 April, the affected stakeholders and contractors discussed working hours so that we can do our best to work around them," says project manager, Andrew Scobie.

The next construction impact meeting is on 20 May at 2pm in the old fire station building.

Take a break at The Espy Cafe on the Esplanade

Every week we continue promoting businesses affected by the upgrade. This week we spoke to the owner of The Espy Cafe, Kelvin Jones at 10 Esplanade, Whitianga.

Kelvin and his family have owned Espy Cafe for almost three years. Before moving to Whitianga they owned a Bach in Whitianga but lived in Auckland.

"We decided to move down here from a for a change of lifestyle," says Kelvin.

"There’s no traffic, it’s a quick drive to the beach, and the school is amazing."

"I think stage one of the town centre upgrade looks amazing, they have really modernised the town," he says.

"The contractors working on stage two of the project have been amazing; they are really understanding and have been extremely co-operative, " says Kelvin.

The Espy Cafe has a relaxed and inviting sense as soon as you walk in the doors. Relax and enjoy their amazing food or something cold on a hot afternoon as you sit down by the waterfront and watch the boats being launched along the estuary. The Espy Cafe has a large lounge area that is kid-friendly with free Wi-Fi.

The Espy Cafe has daily specials. For more information check them out in store or visit their Facebook page.
