Environment Canterbury showed two years ago that they understand their moral responsibilities to act on the climate on behalf of all Canterbury as well as the rest of the world. Will they do so again?

In 2017 the ECan council became the first and only regional council to ask the government to stop deep sea oil drilling of our coasts.

Extinction Rebellion Ōtautahi spokesperson Shere Khan Silver says "Will ECan show courage by declaring a climate and ecological emergency? We hope so."

"Climate change is already harming vulnerable communities, and along with ecological breakdown and mass extinction requires urgent action. We’re glad ECan is showing signs of leadership on this." she continues.

Silver says "Telling the truth about the climate and ecological emergency will be an important first step for ECan. What we’ll need next is zero carbon by 2025, ecological regeneration, and participatory democracy."

"If ECan votes against declaring an emergency, we won’t hesitate to put further pressure on them through creative and non-violent protest." says Silver.
