Clean-up operations around the site of the washout on Lake Terrace are gathering pace, with crews starting work on the lake shore today.

Following discussions with Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board and Waikato Regional Council on a range of clean-up options, it has been decided that council crews will make regular sweeps of the shore from the Hole in One through to the Floatplane to collect debris as well as any litter. Tūwharetoa Maori Trust Board preferred this method as it had the least negative impact on the lake and shoreline, and project manager Philip King said teams would continue the sweeps for as long as it takes.

"We’re removing the booms and silt traps that were put in place just after the wash out, and now that the site has been made safe and we have a preferred clean up method we’ll be making regular inspections and picking up anything that shouldn’t be there," said Mr King.

"We’ll also be inspecting the lakebed from the Hole in One out into Tapuaeharuru Bay, and down river through the marina to the control gates for any remaining debris and of course our water monitoring will continue."
