Prolonged heavy rain for western parts of the South Island, and gales for parts of central and southern New Zealand

A strong and moist northwesterly flow covers the country this week, with a number of embedded fronts bringing periods of heavy rain and northwest gales to central and southern parts of New Zealand.

Significant heavy rain is forecast for western parts of the South Island this week. Flooding and disruption to transport is likely, as well as hazardous conditions for tramping.

People are advised to keep up to date with forecasts as further watches and warnings for this significant weather event will be issued this week.

STRONG WIND WATCH

Area: Wairarapa and Tararua District Valid: 3 hours from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday Forecast: Northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places at times.

Area: Marlborough Valid: 7 hours from 5:00 pm Wednesday to 12:00 am Thursday Forecast: Northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places at times.

Area: Canterbury High Country Valid: 28 hours from 5:00 pm Tuesday to 9:00 pm Wednesday Forecast: Northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places at times.

Please note, winds should ease for a time from this evening (Tuesday), then pick up again early Wednesday morning.

Heavy rain watch lifted for: Mount Taranaki: The threat of warning amounts of rain has passed, and the watch is lifted.

Strong wind watch lifted for: Taranaki about and south of the Mountain, Taihape and Whanganui: The threat of severe northerly gales has passed, and the watch is lifted.

Strong wind watch lifted for: Nelson, Buller and Westland north of Hokitika: The threat of severe northerly gales has passed, and the watch is lifted.
