Wanaka: Visitors to next year's Warbirds Over Wanaka International airshow will be able to take home a helicopter, light plane or even a boat along with the usual souvenirs, thanks to a new initiative by the show's organisers. With the global recession putting pressure on aircraft owners, many more were being put up for sale here and overseas, according to airshow Manager, Mandy Deans. A special aviation sales lot will be set up at the 2010 international airshow and Ms Deans said there were already helicopters and light planes being put forward for inclusion before the plan had even been advertised. "It's estimated that around the world there are over 30,000 second-hand aircraft for sale and with the airshow will provide owners with a large and targeted captive audience. We wish to help owners sell their aircraft, old or new, warbirds or otherwise. During the airshow, which attracts tens of thousands of aviation enthusiasts, part of Wanaka Airport will become an aircraft sales lot, complete with sales tents and security guards." Ms Deans said she got the idea after visiting the recent Avalon Airshow in Australia. "All these planes were lined up and offered for sale and it caused quite a buzz among those attending." It is the second new initiative from the Warbirds Over Wanaka Community Trust for the Easter holiday event, which has in the past attracted around 100,000 visitors. A food and wine expo showcasing local produce will also be held as part of the airshow and Ms Deans said this idea was also attracting considerable interest. The show begins on April 2 with an aircraft practice day, then the main airshow will be held on April 3 and 4. Ticket sales continued to be strong, she said.
