At about 10.00 pm on the evening of Thursday 30 November 2008 a male person walked into a bottle store at the Gisborne Hotel and demanded money from the 67 year old store attendant. The attendant was at the front of the store by himself and another worker was at the rear of the store.

The male had in his possession a loaded sawn off shot gun.

A struggle has then taken place between the attendant and the person demanding money. The second worker after calling police has then come to the aid of the 67 year old and they have managed to hold the offender until the police have arrived.

Police are praising the efforts of the store staff and in particular wish to recognise the gutsy effort of the 67 year old. No doubt today he is pondering how fortunate he is to have come out with some injuries but also realising how easily the situation could have resulted in much more serious injury.

A 22 year old male will appear in the Gisborne court today charged with Assault with intent to rob. He does not reside locally and has only recently being released from prison
