Wellington, Nov 28 NZPA - A Crown lawyer's attempt to appeal the name suppression of an entertainer who committed an indecent act on a 16-year-old girl has been blocked by the Solicitor-General.
The entertainer admitted forcing the teenager's head into his genitals and was discharged without conviction by Judge Eddie Paul in the Auckland District Court earlier this month.
He was also given permanent name suppression.
A senior Crown prosecutor had looked at appealing the suppression order, but the move was blocked by Solicitor-General David Collins, QC, The Weekend Herald reported.
A Crown Law spokeswoman confirmed an appeal had been discussed but declined to comment.
The entertainer's identity was widely known, and the suppression order had been flouted on the internet.
Prime Minister John Key admitted last week that he knew the entertainer's identity.
