Auckland’s Sky Tower will be cloaked in Canterbury colours tonight to mark the first anniversary of the earthquake.
“We want to show support for the people of Christchurch so we’re turning the Sky Tower red as a symbol of solidarity, it’s our way of saying ‘Kia Kaha Canterbury” said SKYCITY’s General Manager of Group Services, Gráinne Troute.
SKYCITY has estimated that there were 2,500 people on-site in Auckland when the memorial service was being broadcast from Christchurch this afternoon.
All staff encouraged diners, customers and guests to join with them and observe the two minutes of silence at exactly 12:51pm.
“It was extremely poignant to watch a busy place like SKYCITY stop completely for two minutes and see everyone so deep in thought”.
