Christchurch, Feb 9 NZPA - An inquest into the death of Stephen Jon Bellingham, shot by the police during an incident in September 2007, was adjourned after a short session of legal argument in the Christchurch Coroner's Court today.

The decision on the legal argument was reserved and is due to be given on Wednesday.

No date has been set yet for the hearing of evidence in the inquest.

Mr Bellingham, 37, was shot in Stanmore Road on September 26, 2007, when he had been behaving irrationally, smashing a vehicle's windows and setting a fire.

He was shot as he allegedly advanced on a police officer while holding a hammer threateningly.
