Best Job Winner To Kayak Great Barrier Reef

Best Job in the World winner Ben Southall will kayak and sail a gruelling 1600km along Australia’s Great Barrier Reef in his latest epic adventure ‘The Best Expedition in the World’.

The 36-year-old Englishman will bring the Great Barrier Reef’s incredible tourist experiences to life during his self-described ‘Voyage of Discovery’, which follows his hugely successful role as the Best Job in the World Caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef in 2009.

Ben will spend four months exploring the reef and Queensland coastline and blogging about his adventures including skydiving, rafting, bushwalking, snorkelling, diving and fishing.

“The journey will highlight quintessential Queensland experiences: islands and beaches, natural encounters, adventure and Queensland’s enviable lifestyle,” Ben said.

“But it will also showcase why the Great Barrier Reef is the greatest reef on earth. The marine park is the world’s healthiest reef system because of best practice management and a firm commitment from the tourism industry to its conservation.

“Nowhere else in the world can visitors have such high quality experiences on a coral reef. I’ll be bringing these incredible experiences to life and hope to take the whole world along for the ride again.”

Ben will again take his experiences to the world using the same channels that made Tourism Queensland’s Best Job in the World campaign a global success, via blogs, photo diaries, video updates and ongoing media interviews.

The adventurer departed from the Town of 1770 on the central Queensland coast on 21 May and he will complete his journey in Cooktown in the state’s far north on 12 September 2011.

Ben will make his way up Queensland’s coast using a Hobie Tandem Adventure Island Kayak which can be paddled, peddled or sailed. Along the way he’ll engage in a range of activities with researchers, tourism operators and expedition partners.

The attached press release details Ben's Best Expedition as well as an itinerary of his route and a fact sheet on the Great Barrier Reef.
