The New Zealand Geographic Board today gazetted 15 place name proposals that did not receive objecting submissions from the public.
The Board made final decisions on these place names when it met on 3 August 2010.
The following are of possible interest to media:
Stokes Peak - a feature in the Kaimai Range directly above the Kaimai railway tunnel, named after the late Dame Evelyn Stokes.
Hue tē Taka Peninsula - the new name for a small peninsula at the eastern end of Wellington's Lyall Bay.
Te Waikoropupū Springs - a spelling alteration to the name of the popular natural springs located in Golden Bay, Nelson.
Macrons have been inserted for Ōkārito (locality), Ōkārito Lagoon, Ōkārito River. The lake formerly known and incorrectly spelt as Lake Windemere now has the dual name Ōkāritoiti / Lake Windermere.
Moose Lake - a new name for a small lake in Fiordland associated with the release of moose in 1910.
Also gazetted were 3 Antarctic names, 1 corrigendum changing the description of a name, and 1 approved 'recorded' name. These final decisions will be published in newspaper public notices 11-16 September 2010.
