Boat fire on Hauraki Gulf

Coastguard's Operations Centre was alerted by the Fire Service just before 8 o'clock this morning to a vessel on fire near Home Bay, Motutapu Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf.

Coastguard's Operations Centre was alerted by the Fire Service just before 8 o'clock this morning to a vessel on fire near Home Bay, Motutapu Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf.

Coastguard's Operations Centre broardcast a distress relay on its VHF Channel which alerted a member of the public to the situation who was then requested to remove the two persons from the burning vessel. Waiheke Rescue was tasked to the distress arriving onscene within 20 minutes from activation, Police Launch Deodar III also responded with fire crew on board.

The vessel a 10m Hybrid Launch powered by both diesel and electric power had smoke from the the rare of the vessel with the sides of the vessel hot and showing significant signs of fire on board with the paint blistering and smoke intensity increasing in the cabin. Small explosions could also be heard from inside the vessel.

Coastguard volunteers on board Waiheke Rescue uplifted the two persons from the member of the publics vessel and treated them for smoke inhallation. The fire crew boarded the vessel and expended 7 fire extinguishes to bring the situation under control.

The vessel was then taken under tow by Waiheke Rescue to Gulf Harbour Marina where the two people from the vessel have been assessed by ambulance crew.
